130a. Notification by Richard of Dover, archbishop of Canterbury, of a composition reached before him between John de Garland and Gervase the clerk concerning the vicarage of East Hanningfield. John is to retain all the tithes of the house of Agnes de Mountchesney and the church house and the land adjacent to the church, except for one acre of land which Agnes gave to the church when she acquired the manor against Cecily countess of Hereford her sister, and except for two acres which are of the fee of Robert son of Tecius. John is also to have the tithes of the lands which the canons of Bicknacre now cultivate in this parish. Gervase shall have all the tithes, offerings and all other profits pertaining to the church, and shall exonerate John from all customs due to the bishop and his officials. Gervase swore faith, honour and reverence to John the parson, and that he would in no way seek to disturb his possession, and any chaplain who shall minister in the church shall swear this oath. John also swore to observe the terms of this composition. 25 March - 13 November 1182.
