Comment

Date: This charter and the next were doubtless issued at much the same time as no. 115, and certainly before 5 Feb. 1139-40 when archbishop Thurstan died. The second witness can probably be identified as Ralph Newel, bishop of Orkney. The third was William de Sainte-Barbe, dean of York; the fourth was Geoffrey Turcople, archdeacon of Nottingham at this period ;4 and the fifth was Bertram Haget who witnessed a charter to Roger de Mowbray not later than 1145,5 and one of Roger de Mowbray's wife in 1154.
