96. To Hubert de Burgh, the king's chamberlain [April 1200] Grant, made at the request of the king, of his (Earl William's) younger daughter, Joan, in marriage, together with the whole of the Isle of Wight and the honour of Christchurch (the caput of his honour in Devon, with his castle at Plympton, having been assigned to his elder daughter, Marion); for which Hubert de Burgh has received the homage of the barons and knights of the Island, saving theirfealty to any male heir subsequently born to Earl William's wife, and to the earl himself during his lifetime; and should a male heir be born, then there shall remain to Hubert in lieu of his wife's marriage portion, 60 librates of land and a fee of ten knights. Comment

Date: King John's contemporary inspeximus is dated 28 April 1200 (Rot. Chart., p 52). By an arrangement concluded a month or two previously, William's elder daughter, Marion, had been betrothed to another royal favourite, Peter de Pr6aux (Rot. Chart., p 33). In effect, Earl William was thus consenting to the division of his estates between the king's nominees. However, the birth of a son soon after these arrangements had been made, deprived his daughters of their status of co-heiresses and the marriages were never finalised (above, p 15)
