Comment

Date: The king's complementary grant, with identical witnesses, is dated as above. Crewkerne had formed part of the dower of Earl Baldwin 11's widow, Denise countess of Berry. Following the loss of Normandy, it escheated to the crown, but instead of restoring it to Earl William, the king had granted it to two favourites, Cresec and Balliol. Earl William protested and the manor was restored to him, but subject to this annuity. Earl William later refused to pay this, probably because Cresec at least had also been compensated by the king with a grant of 40 librates of land in Norfolk. The matter was reviewed in 1204-5 and the dispute settled (Rot. Claus., i, 18; Rot. Pat., p 32; PRS, NS xix, 1941, p 140; Rot. Fin., pp 235-6)
