Abstract132 Settlement at the metropolitical visitation of 1280 between the parishioners of Crich and the rectors. It is agreed that the abbot and convent of Darley are to provide an image of the Virgin Mary to stand in the chancel of the parish church and also to find all the necessities for the chancel, except for the missal and the chalice which are to be provided by the parishioners. With regard to the blessed bread and the maintenance and repair of the nave, the abbot and convent are to contribute in proportion to their lands and tenements in the parish of Crich, excluding the ancient glebe (20 March 1280). Abstract96. WILLOUGHBY, BONTHORPE Agreement between William son of Robert of Well and William son of Robert of Willoughby. William of Well and his villeins of Bonthorpe had a path through the middle of William of Willoughby's courtyard, for going on foot and for carrying a bier to Willoughby church and from there to Bonthorpe. William of Well now quitclaims the path and any rights in it in that courtyard to William of Willoughby, who may block it by a wall or dike or in any other way. In return he demises to William of Well and his villeins a path as above, six feet wide, beginning on the east side of Brakenholm, crossing to Kyrkefen where they used to go, then to the causeway among the willows south of the cow pasture, then to the west garden on the north side of Willoughby manor house, across the garden on the west bank of the dike, across the road to Willoughby church stile next to the rector's gate, to come and go freely, saving to William of Willoughby the soil of the path. Abstract131 Agreement between the parishioners of Crich and the abbot and convent of Darley, rectors of Crich, made under the auspices of the commissaries appointed by John Peckham, archbishop of Canterbury, to finish his visitation of the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield. The abbey is to be responsible for the bell-ringing, ropes etc., and for the distribution of alms in the parish as hitherto. With regard to the request of the parishioners to maintain a chantry in the chapel of St. Thomas the Martyr in the cemetery of Crich, the matter is to be held over until Ralph 11 de Frescheville (lord of Crich) comes of age (in 1287), and then to be decided by the commissaries or bv other judges appointed by the parties (31 July 1280). Abstract393a (=1393). Memorandum of a plea levied by writ of right by William of Anstey, a freeman, against Abbot Richard of London (1274-95) for a messuage, a virgate of arable, and 2 acres of meadow with appurtenances in the vill(age) of Cottingham, in court at Castor before Master Robert of Sheffield then steward of Peterborough in the 18th and 19th years of King Edward (1289-91). The abbot conceded it to him out of court.
