Date: 1226-09-02
Abstract59. Judgement by prior William of Holy Trinity Ipswich, prior Gilbert of SS Peter and Paul Ipswich and Master G. rural dean of Ipswich, judges delegate appointed by a mandate of Pope Honorius III (23 December 1225), in a dispute between the prior and convent on the one hand and Nicholas the priest and Peter rectors of the church of St Martin's Dunwich and W. clerk on the other, concerning the annual pension of 30s due from that church. Nicholas and Peter recognise that they owe the pension to the prior and convent and promise to pay it in future, on pain of a fine of 30s. At St Matthew's Ipswich. 2 September 1226. Sententia de pensione ecclesie Sancti Martini de Donewico. Note: Gilbert was elected prior of SS Peter and Paul in 1225 (Heads, 167) and occurs as a judge delegate with prior W. of Holy Trinity and Master G. dean of Ipswich in a judgement given in St Matthew's on 22 September (Stoke-by-Clare Cart, no. 505). From the wording of the Clare document it is clear that the scribe has omitted the letter 'G' for Gilbert between the first et and de of the address. For Nicholas and Peter see nos 163-4 and for Peter see Blythburgh Cart., nos 253-4. (VerdictDUNWICH, SUFFOLK (ENGLAND)) Givers: William (Prior of Ipswich - Holy Trinity Priory), Gilbert (Prior of Ipswich - SS. Peter and Paul Priory), Master G.
