Abstract: 88. WAINFLEET Although the Wainfleet custumal has been published with a translation in Justice, 132-7, from another copy in PRO DI-42-5, it figures there only as an appendix to a series of lectures to which it is somewhat tenuously connected, and is thus in danger of being overlooked. Moreover, through misunderstanding Limnallimina, rendered as 'landing place' or 'shore' (as if Latin limen) but in fact the river Lymn - more precisely, its original outfall between Croft and Wainfleet (cf. 47-9) - the river's significance as the northern boundary of the port's jurisdiction is missed, Wolmersty Cross being the southern boundary. It has therefore seemed worthwhile to publish the text again from a different version, even though this does not diverge widely from the other. Final concord made in the king's court at Bishop's (now King's) Lynn before the itinerant justices named between John prior of Stoke by Clare, parson of Crimplesham, and Theodore de Crimplesham, whom Alice his mother vouched to warranty, concerning two hundred acres and a messuage in Crimplesham, which the prior recognised to be the right of Theodore, to be held in inheritance of the prior and his successors for an annual rent of twenty shillings.
