General guideline

MOM-CA is a collaborative database system which allows for the research and editing of medieval and early modern charters. By and large you can find the charters organized according to archival "fonds"; charters that originate from different sources are subsumed under "Collections". Most of the charters have images; many of them also have descriptions and to a smaller extend even transcriptions, depending on what kind of information material the archivists and researchers have already been able to provide. By way of the search facility you can search for descriptions of charters as well as their transcriptions. You can find a basic introduction into MOM-CA at the github-wiki of the project and in our screencast tutorials at http://monasterium.net/tut_mom/. The image tools are described at https://github.com/icaruseu/mom-ca/wiki/User-interventions:-Manipulate-images.

After registering as user you can:

  •   save your search results in a list of bookmarks
  • make notes on individual image details
  •   organize image details in collections in order to modify and compare them with each other (> manual)

For the most part the description of the data varies considerably. You can contribute to make corrections and to describe charters more in detail. In order to actively participate as an editor, you will need to register with your e-mail, choose a password and decide on a moderator responsible for you. The moderator will review changes made by you before publishing them.

Basically any conventional browser can be used. Nevertheless, please be aware that the Internet Explorer can only be used from version 9 on upward.

You can access the Editor tool by clicking "Save and Edit Charter"-button in the lower right corner of the image. In case a charter is currently being edited by a user, respective charter is locked for editing by other users.

The Editor tool itself is subdivided into 5 areas, which are represented by the following tabs:

  • Regestum (abstract, place of issue, date)
  • Transcription
  • Data source (source of the transcription resp. of the regesta)
  • Original (archival data, textual tradition, material, measurements, condition, seal data, notations)
  • Copies (further text witnesses)
  • Comments (bibliographical references, diplomatic and other comments)
  • Annex (index of persons, places or subjects)

By activating one of the tabs, the input mask will pop up to enter data.

You can find an introduction into the main editor at http://monasterium.net/tut_edit/

The old editor looks like the following

!!!!Attention!!!! If you want to insert text modules via cut & paste, be sure to do so only via the insert-button located in the upper right corner of the field. For this purpose the cursor has to be actively visible in the section.

Needless to say, not all of the fields have to be completed at once. The data sets can be extended at any time.

Besides the simple insertion of data, texts can also be indexed even further by way of marking them up with xml-elements. The indexing follows the code of practice of conventional text processing programs and is menu based. In the header area of each field you can find captions that can be activated through a dropdown menu. The indexing can be made by first marking a specific text passage with your mouse or keyboard and then, secondly, selecting the respective element from the dropdown menu.

The indexing elements are organized into three sections:

  1. Functional/textual indexing (issuer, measurements, name of places etc.)
  2. Indexing of features of the original (line break, change of writer, damages etc.)
  3. Diplomatic indexing (parts of the form like arenga, narration, dispositio etc.)

There are various possibilities of indexing at your disposal, depending on the field content (be it the field of the regest, full text field, place of issue etc.) you wish to edit.

You can find a more detailed description on the functionalities of the tabs and menu items here: MyArchive>Documentation>EditMOM

After finishing the indexing, the results can be saved via the save-button. Under MyArchive/Charters in Progress the charter can always be further edited at any time. Upon completion of the editing work, the charter can be published and forwarded to the responsible moderator to be reviewed and where required published. From this moment on the charter including all of the changes made, is publicly visible and is readily available for further editing by other users.

A detailed documentation resp. help-manual is currently being elaborated at https://github.com/icaruseu/mom-ca/wiki/Users-guide-to-MOM-CA.
