Original Designation: no. 253 (p.181-82). Notification by Richard de Hulmo dean of Lewes that he has received from abbot Henry I and the convent all their land of Rottingdean and Baldeshill (in Rottingdean) by lease for life (recited) of 1244-5 for an annual rent of 6 1/2m to be paid at the abbey of Stratford (Langthorne); the land is not to be in any way alienated or damaged; Richard has undertaken to build on their land of Baldeshill a building of the value of £20 and if he dies beforehand then he has bound over all his goods to Sibton to make satisfaction before other payments are made. Further Richard has promised to restore lands formerly laid waste and ill alienated from the fee and to acquit it from all services except the king's scutage. [O]mnibus Christi fidelibus presens scriptum visuris Ricardus de Hulmo decanus Lewensis salutem in Domino Noverit universitas vestra me recepisse ab Henrico abbate de Sybetun[] et eiusdem loci conventu totam terram eorum de Rottingden[] et de Baldeshilde cum pertinentiis suis ad firmam in vita mea sub forma subscripta [...] Ad hec autem ego Ricardus defendam et acquietabo totam predictam terram cum pertinentiis de omnibus querelis et demandis et servitiis et scutagiis contra omnes excepto scutagio domini regis quando contigerit quod comites et barones et alii liberi homines dant scutagium de dominico proprio et bursa propria et non recipiunt illud de hominibus et tenentibus suis Et ad maiorem securitatem hinc inde faciendum presenti scripto penes dictum abbatem et conventum remanenti sigillum meum est appensum Testibus
