417. Composicio cum ecclesia de Arneclif de decimis de Litton. [1227] Brother Gerard, the abbot of Furness, and the priors of Cartmel and Lancaster were appointed by Pope Honorius 111 (1216 27) to settle a dispute between Sallay abbey and Richard, parson of Arncliff, concerning certain tithes in Arneliff parish. It was agreed that by the authority of the Cis- tercian privileges and the sanction of a General Council, the monks ought to be exempt from tithes on lands they cultivated by their own labour or expense at the time of the General Council, but for the sake of peace should pay the church of St. Oswald, Arncliff, 2s. yearly.
