Comment

Date: Ibberton was a demesne manor which, with Fleet and Puddletown (Dorset) may have been given to Hawise by Earl Baldwin I for her marriage portion (below, nos. 111, 118; PRS, NS xliv, 1982, p 27). Following this exchange, Earl William is duly recorded in possession in 1212 (Book of Fees, i, 90). The reference to tallages of the borough is the earliest evidence for a borough in Honiton, which is consistent with the late l3th-century statement that it was founded by Earl William (below, Appendix 1, no. 24). Hawise was dead by 1219 (Book of Fees, i, 263). Feast Regnal
