Date: For date, see no. 120. Her gift was confirmed by King John during a visit to Christchurch in January 1216 (Rot. Chart., p 205). For confirmation of this gift by her brother, Earl William, see above, nos. 108-9. Fleet, held by Hawise from at least 1158, formed part of the land settled on her on her marriage to the earl of Gloucester's son (above, no. I 11; below, Appendix 1, no. 37). This gift, made allegedly when Hawise was of a great age, ill and living at the priory, was in 1224 disputed by her great-grandson, William de Chambernon, when he came of age. He claimed the manor had earlier been given to his father (above, no. 114; Bracton's Note Book, iii, 28, no. 979). For the service due from Fleet, see note to no. 108 above. The land reserved to Quarr may be the carucate confirmed by Philp Tessun as her gift (Formulare Anglicanum, p 42, no. 74) and-or the 20 soliclates confirmed as her gift by Earl William (above, no. 76). In the mid 13th century, Quarr exchanged this with Christchurch for land in Apse on the Isle of Wight Quarr Charters, p 119, no. 486). For some of the free tenants whose rights are protected, see nos. 115-16; Appendix 1, no. 39. For Jordan de Chambernon, see nos. 114-15,117Charter on the DEEDS-homepage: http://deeds.library.utoronto.ca/charters/00790118
