Comment

Date: The witness list to this charter raises two main problems. Geoffrey succeeded the ancient Walkelin as archdn of Suffolk sometime shortly after 13 Nov. 1188; they cannot properly occur together as archdns (EEA vi, pp. lxxxvi-vii; Fasti 1066-1300 ii, 67). Roger Bigod was not created earl of Norfolk until 25 Nov. 1189 (HBC, 473). This charter records a grant made before, or at least at, the consecration of the cemetery by bp John of Oxford (4); it is otherwise unobjec- tionable, and was probably written after Geoffrey's promotion and the earl's creation, describing a grant made some months before.
