Comment
Date: Henry of Essex suceeded Robert de Vere as constable sometime before 1151, when Henry is so styled (Round G. de M. p. 326; Hattons Book of Seals p. 295 no. 424; RRA-N iii p. xx), and held that hereditary position until his disgrace in 1163 (Round G. de M. p. 327). Henry, his son, is witness to a charter of c. 1156 X 1158 (Receuil Henri II i 181-2 no. lxxviii). In view of the unusual preamble it might, on the other hand, be argued that this charter was issued after the disgrace of Henry of Essex, when he was a monk at Reading.Charter on the DEEDS-homepage: http://deeds.library.utoronto.ca/charters/00880264
