Comment
Date: The following charter is no longer in existence; it was seen and copied by Twyne (xxiii. 105), but Wood did not see it (City of Oxford, i. 220). It has been often quoted, [...]. Wood (City of Oxford, iii. 3) assigns this document to the year 1134, but as John Kepebarm lived until 1204 or 1205, and Thomas son of Eilric outlived him, a date before 1160 is impossible. As the portmote always met on Monday, our choice is limited to the years 1161, 1167, 1172, or 1178, in which years St. Cuthbert's day (March 2o) fell on Monday. Probably 1172 is the year, for in the Pipe Roll of Michaelmas 1175 we read (p. 14) that within the last twelve months Lefwin, the Prepositus of Oxford, had paid two marks for allowing the escape of a robber, no doubt from the prison of Oxford, during his year of office.Charter on the DEEDS-homepage: http://deeds.library.utoronto.ca/charters/00891097
