Date: MS. omits the year of the pontificate. Otto's legation to the British Isles is to be dated July 1237-January 1241 (F. M. Powicke and C. R. Cheney (ed.), Councils and Synods (in progress, 1964- ), vol. II, p. 237; D. M. Williamson, 'Some Aspects of the Legation of Cardinal Otto in England, 1237-41, E.H.R., LXIV (1949), pp. 145-73). The date of the papal document is given in E.H.R., LXIV, p. 173, as 5 April 1240 (using B.M. Harley MS. 6603, fos. 172v-173, i.e. pp. 342-3), but here it is clearly 7 April. Papal
