163. Judgment by Stephen, archbishop of Canterbury, in a dispute between the prior and convent of St. Gregory and Herbert, rector of the church of Pluckley. The tithes of Pluckley are to be paid for ever to the rector of the church, who will give 2 marks yearly to the priory; and his successors will make an oath, when they are instituted to the living, to continue this payment. Omnibus Christi fidelibus presentes literas inspecturis Stephanus permissione divina Cantuariensis ecclesie minister humilis tocius Anglie primas et sancte Romane ecclesie cardinalis salutem in domino Ad uniuersitatis uestre noticiam uolumus peruenire quod cum inter dilectos filios priorem et conuentum sancti Gregorii Cant[] et Herebertum personam ecclesie de Pluk[] super quibusdam decimis in parrochia de Pluk[] coram nobis questio uerteretur facta diligentius inquisitione super iure seu possessione partium hinc inde in decimis memoratis tandem spontanee consenserunt ut nos de dictis decimis ordinaremus pro voluntate nostra apud dictos priorem et conuentum uel memoratum Herebertum et personas de Pluk[] qui pro tempore fuerint sine aliqua contentione in posterum remanendis Nos igitur pensatis pensandis et habito consilio uirorum discretorum ita duximus ordinandum Quod scilicet omnes ille decime petite a dictis priore et conuentu perpetuo resideant penes personas ecclesie de Pluk[] ad quam utique de iure spectant Ita quod nichil sibi vendicare potuerit decetero dicti prior et conuentus in aliquibus decimis infra parrochiam de Pluk[] siue sint de dominico siue non ratione alicuius concessionis sibi facte usque ad diem istum Et nos intuitu pietatis assignauimus dictis priori et conuentui beneficium duaram marcarum eis perpetuo et annuatim a persona de Pluk[] qui pro tempore fuerit soluendarum ita quod una marca soluata in festo sancti Michaelis et alia in festo Pasce Et quod hanc solutionem fideliter faciet iurabit quilibet qui persona fuerit ecclesie de Pluk[] in institutione sua In cuius rei testimonium has literas nostras patentes sigillo nostro signatas dictis priori et conuentui duximus concedendas Datum anno domini m cc xxv mense Aug[] Valete in domino
