Memorandum of a writ from the representative of the justice of the forest this side of Trent to Rog. son of John forester of Shropshire ordering him to take pledges from the abbot that he would appear before the said justice to answer for the waste he had caused in the wood of Hadnall. The abbot found the pledges and the wood was set free on 3 Feb. 1301. Comment

Date: This writ preceded the forest perambulations prior to Edward I's confirmation of the Charter of the Forest on 14 Feb. 1301. Although there is some confusion, the writ must have been dated 24 Jan. 1300. The perambulations seem to have taken place in June 1300 (P.R.O., C 47-12-10) and the date 3 Feb. 1301 must refer to the disafforestation of the wood which was confirmed later by the king.
