47. To St James Priory, Exeter; 14 August 1159, at Silverton (Devon) Notification to Robert H, bishop of Exeter, that a dispute between him (the earl) and the primy of St James, concerning the church of Tiverton (Devon) has been settled in such a way that half the church and its revenues shall belong to the primy and that the other half shall be reserved for the support of two clerks' to be chosen by the earl and his successors and who are to be responsible for the payment of all episcopal dues; and the priory's half, further subdivided into four portions, shall be held for the lives of Walter son of Alexander, once dean, and Pagan the chaplain; and confirming the land and wood of Cotley (in Dunsford, Devon) and a forester named Robert. Comment
Date: Tiverton church had been granted to St James Priory by Earl Baldwin I (above, no. 25), apparently in its entirety. Following the above agreement, only half the church was confirmed to the priory (below, no. 61) and in 1284 only a portion of the advowson remained in its hands, the rest being held by the Redvers family (CIPM 1272-91, p 388, no. 539). For the grant of Cotley Wood, see above no. 28. Silverton, where the charter was issued, was held of the Redvers family in the 13th century and presumably earlier (CIPM 1216-72, p 15, no. 63; Aids, i, 321). Bartholomew of Exeter, who witnesses, later (1180 x 1184) confirmed this agreement when bishop of Exeter (Bartholomew of Exeter, pp 148-9) A.D.
