Comment
Date: Richard made three other grants for his brother's soul (below, nos. 64-5; Appendix 1, no. 20), all witnessed by the two archbishops who attest here. In two of these (nos. 64-5), it is clear that his brother is dead, which also explains why the demesne manor of Wroxall is in Richard's hands. In the third, however (Appendix 1, no. 20), it is also clear that Henry 11 is still alive. The two archbishops are known to have been together in Normandy during the summer of 1189 and, as another witness to the above charter is William d'Aubigny, earl of Arundel (but not so styled elsewhere until July 1189), it is likely that Richard made these four grants while serving with Henry 11 during his last Normandy campaign (Complete Peerage, i, 236; R.W. Eyton, Court, Household and Itinerary of King Henry II, London, 1878, pp 295-7). The attestations of Gilbert Pipard, a royal justice, and Ralph fitz Stephen, the king's chamberlain, would support this view.Charter on the DEEDS-homepage: http://deeds.library.utoronto.ca/charters/00790063
