Comment

Date: As it stands, this charter indicates that Robert de Lucy was the son of Eustace III, earl of Boulogne; but comparing it with N no. 212 it seems probable that pater meus is a scribal error for pater eius, and that this should be read as a confirmation of William Sorrell's grant rather than a confirmation of Eustance's charter. On the other hand, the relationship of Robert to Eustace, and the origin of Robert's jurisdiction over land in Chrishall is unclear, unless Robert is in fact his son, albeit perhaps illegitimate (Round believes that Ralph and Eustace, sons of the earl [N no. 212], were illegitimate: Peerage pp. 164-5). Another possibility is that Robert is a scribal error for Richard, yet the latter received the manor of Chrishall from King Stephen and Queen Matilda c. 1135 X 1152 (Round 'Ongar' pp. 144-5). Furthermore, when the land in question is referred to in association with Richard de Lucy c. 1170 X 1181, Richard Sorrell is described as having granted it to the Hospitallers 'concessu Roberti de Lucy' (N no. 219). If the charter is valid the reference to Odo and Andrew suggests that it was issued soon after N no. 212.
