Comment

Date: Wednesday after St Leonard, 35 Henry II [sic] (recte 9 November 1188). Strictly there was no feast of St Leonard in 35 Henry II, which began on 19 December 1178 and ended with the king's death on 6 July 1189. However, owing to the long gap between Stephen's death on 25 October 1154 and Henry II's crowning there is considerable confusion over the dates of fines which fall towards the end of the calendar year in Henry II's reign. For the date of this fine vid. D.M.Stenton, Pleas before the King and his justices 1198-1212, III (Selden Society vol. LXXXIII 1967), lxxv. It is not preserved in the Public Record Office. Regnal
