Comment

Date: This debt was almost certainly the residue of a fine of 500 marks which the earl had incurred in 1204 to recover his lands from the king (PRS, NS xix, 1941, p 140; Rot. Fin., pp 235-6). This was supposed to have been paid over two years, but by Michaelmas 1206, L66 5s 6d was still outstanding (PRS, NS xx, 1942, p 129). This was duly paid off by Michaelmas 1207 (PRS, NS xxii, 1946, p 57). In 1207, Easter fell on 23 April Feast Regnal
