During 1203
Tsar Kaloyan tells the Pope that he has sent Archbishop Basil with lavish gifts to Rome, but the Greeks didn’t allow him to cross the sea, so the Archbishop had to send two of his men to continue the journey to Rome. Kaloyan asks Innocent III to crown him with an imperial crown and elevate Basil to the rank of patriarch.
