Abstract: 290. Record of the plea heard before the king's justices at Westminster on the octave of St John Baptist 1260, of the abbot of Beaulieu against twenty seven men (named) touching their opposition to procedure by little writ of right close in the manor of Faringdon, ancient demesne of the crown; they claimed that only that part of the town to the west of the brook was ancient demesne. At an inquisition taken before the king's itinerant justices at Reading, three weeks after Candlemas 1261, it was shown that the whole town was ancient demesne; the tenants to the west of the brook were villani of the abbot and could be tallaged at his will, but those to the east held freely by certain customs and services and were tallaged only when the king tallaged his demesne; the abbot was awarded damages of 5 marks. Westminster, 1 July 1260, and Reading, 23 February 1261. PLACITA CORAM DOMINO REGE IN OCTAVIS SANCTI JOHANNIS BAPTISTE ANNO XLIIII. Abstract: 61. The rector and parishioners grant to Richard of Abingdon, builder, a house in School Street for the term of his life. 1 It was known as St. Mary's Entry. 2 Anketil Pikering held a house in High Street on the west of Haberdasher Hall; from 1450 to 1700 it belonged to All Souls College. 3 Probably the lowest portion of the tower, which is of the years 1270-1280 (The Church ef St. Mary, by T. G. Jackson, P. 79). 4 Not in MS. 1 The deed is an indenture. It had five seals, of which the third and fifth have perished; the first is illegible, the second is S. WILLELMI LE LYOUR, the fourth is 1 5-8 in. by 1 1-8 in., the Virgin seated with Child and two stars S' PROCRATORV BEATE MARIE. This seal, unknown elsewhere, is reproduced in the Appendix. A seal used by churchwardens is very rare; in Oxford, besides St. Mary's, there was a seal of the churchwardens of St. Mary Magdalen; it is apparently of the latter half of the thirteenth century, and has been reproduced in Collectanea- (O. H. S.), vol. ii. There was also a seal at St. Peter's in the East (Early Science in Oxford, iv. 216, by R. T. Gunther).
