Abstract: 621. Composicio inter abbaciam sancte Marie Ebor. et domum. de Salleya. [12 Aug., 1265] A dispute arose between the abbey of St. Mary's, York, and Sallay abbey during the rule of abbot Hugh, concerning the tithes of 3 acres in Smaws field. Hugh said the tithes belonged to Sallay by reason of the church of Tadcaster, while St. Mary's maintained that the land and tithes belonged to the parish and demesne of Newton. Mutual friends intervening, Sallay agreed to renounce the tithes and St. Mary's to pay to Sallay annually at Tadcaster grange 1 lb. of pepper or 12d. Cf. Towneley MS. 6, p. 58.
